Manco Capac is the 2010 Spring Collector’s Choice and the 10th edition in the Breyer Collector’s Choice series. Created as a dark red roan with dark head and legs on the Peruvian Paso Stallion mold, he is named for an ancient Incan god, Manco Capac, son of the sun god Inti and worshipped as a god of sun and fire. Known for their smooth gaits, proud carriage and luxurious flowing manes, Peruvian Pasos are favored as trail horses and parade horses. Today’s Peruvian Paso, stands at an average of 14.3 hands and goes back to the horses brought to Peru by 15th century Spanish Conquistadors. The breed has been cherished for centuries and the inborn four-beat lateral gait and ‘termino’ for which they are known, has been as carefully cultivated as their intelligence and kind, willing dispositions. Jennifer Betz of Lawrenceville, New Jersey submitted the winning entry for the 2010 Spring Collector’s Choice, a contest in which Breyer collectors are invited to submit and vote on the model they most want Breyer to create.
